My approach to private lessons is that the student's goals come first. My goal as your prospective teacher is to convey the appropriate techniques and pedagogy through a context that applies directly to the things you, the student wish to learn. I approach my teaching this way with the understanding that a student will be more receptive to the lessons if he/she can see how it will help him/her achieve their goals. When the student makes this connection, improvement will manifest from a place of invitation, rather than obligation.
The work I do allows me the chance to offer the same opportunities to others that I have been given by my past teachers. I enjoy seeing a student grasp a concept, or witnessing the moment when a student is able to perform a song that he/she has been trying to learn. But perhaps the greatest beauty I see in this work is the increase in one's potential for self-expression through music. That has been the greatest gift for me as a musician, and it is my aspiration to help each of my students open up to their own creative potential, because it is very empowering and healthy.
