Since I was 15 I stopped my home schooling to be trained by my stepfather to work with rock which came out of the Appalachian mountains and working out of the Roanoke, Virginia area has exceptional color and variation. No rock in the Ohio area has such qualities. Masonry supply stores have some selection of imported rock. My work always ends up with clean and smooth mortar joints with a finish of an exceptional quality made possible by specialized wire brush a previously unpatented tool but later patented by marshalltown which is a leader in masonry tools. Most masons use grey crunched limestone sand which is basically crushed gravel but has it's own method of finish which is simply of a more course nature. when sand closer to the consistency of beach sand is used the finish is much finer. We also work with brick, block and stucco.
