At 5'9" and 135 pounds when I graduated high school, I was your prototypical skinny nerd. I spent years trying to gain bigger muscles, more body weight, etc. and in the end, just wound up skinny-fat; a little heavier, but still without much muscle. Finally, I began to learn what works. Now, more than two decades later, I've added quality weight (muscle), I've competed at powerlfiting setting numerous national records, and I've learned to manipulate bodyweight (up or down) as I desire.
