As your instructor, I am committed to guiding your growth as a musician, pianist, and person. Progress takes time and effort by all parties, and my job is to uphold my end of our mutual contract. We begin with a thorough discussion of your goals at the piano, including where you've come from, where you hope to go, and what is most important to you in music and in life.
Lessons are customized to your needs and goals: in fact, we plot short-, medium-, and long-term goals when we begin our work together. I chart us a path forward with methods, materials, and techniques drawn from decades of experience.
I have taught students from the youngest beginners to age 90. My best teaching, I think, happens when helping students to unlock latent potential and reach goals they haven't yet conceived.
A bit about me:
I earned a doctorate, two master's degrees, and a bachelor's degree (in addition to the prestigious Performer's Certificate--the only pianist to have received this honor since 2006) from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. I have spent 15 years teaching in higher education and I have been a full-time professor teaching music theory, piano, chamber music, music history, and more. I believe in well-rounded musicianship--that priority has deeply shaped how I think and teach.
I have performed and taught throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe, and my recordings have been broadcast on public television, public radio, and syndicates nationwide.
