TEST PREP
Your child is a good student. A smart student. They earn straight A's or maybe A's and B's. So why don't their test scores reflect their true ability and intelligence? Why do they become paralyzed at the mere thought of the SAT or ACT? Why does trying to understand this test feel like trying to understand a foreign language?
Test prep doesn't have to be an unsolvable mystery. I assist anxious, high achieving students in demystifying the test prep process and building confidence. I teach a combination of foundational knowledge as well as strategy in all sections of the ACT and SAT.
I specialize in helping students with mid-range scores to raise their scores to qualify for “reach” schools. Drawing from my background as a therapist (LCSW), I am experienced in helping students who may struggle with test-taking anxiety, working to enhance their executive functioning skills and boost their sense of self efficacy and self esteem.
Typically, I suggest 8-12 weekly, one-hour tutoring sessions. I assign weekly homework designed to both track progress as well as allow students a chance to integrate and practice skills learned during sessions. I average a 3-5 point increase on the ACT and a 200-250 point increase on the SAT.

READING AND WRITING
Your child is sitting at the computer, staring at a mostly-blank screen. They type and delete, type and delete over and over again until the clock strikes midnight. Yes, they should have started days ago, but now they are down to the wire. Panic sets in. Should they ask for an extension, turn in a badly written rough draft (at least it's something!), or pull an all nighter?
Week after week you watch the same excruciating cycle unfold.
Writing doesn't have to be torture. Writing can even be, dare I say, fun. One of my greatest joys is helping clients to overcome judgments and writer's block to discover the pleasure of writing and find their their true voice. I believe that anybody who can speak and read can learn to become an effective and articulate writer.
I teach clients to communicate clearly and confidently in both creative and academic writing styles. I guide students through all stages of the writing process from brainstorming to outlining to drafting to revising and editing.
I assist studnets in developing a solid argument, clarifying the flow of their ideas, and skillfully utilizing supporting evidence. I also work with students to improve sentence structure and flow as well as grammar and punctuation. I assist students ranging from middle school to doctoral candidates. I am familiar with MLA and APA formatting styles

ABOUT ME
My name is Lauren; I am a tutor with over seven years of experience. I was trained in test prep and admissions essay tutoring through Nurturing Wisdom in Chicago. I personally scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT.
I was also trained in executive functioning coaching through Beyond Booksmart. I hold a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and a master’s degree in social work.
I have edited over a dozen fiction and nonfiction manuscripts and have been published in Newcity Chicago. I have also held positions composing and editing documents used in medical litigation cases.
I work with students one-on-one; I do not teach group classes. I offer a free 30 minute trial session for prospective clients.
